Yes, although I find it helps to talk about it so I'm glad the YT community is here.

What a great point. Often theists feel like we just dont' understand them, but I agree that we completely understand their reasoning because we were once like them.

A simple solution is disengagement. Disengagement is peaceful and rewarding.

So glad I got out of that small TX town, although my family is still fairly stifling. I still conceal what there's nothing wrong with. I just don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and take away false hopes. Not everyone is strong enough mentally to survive the switch to atheism. A bit paternalistic of me, but everyone KNOWS their family. Mine are not a terribly "deep" bunch, if you know what I mean. As for understanding spiritual matters, I'd say we have a deeper understanding than they do.

Ironically, many of us who become atheists, understand the concept of spiritual matters well. Many of us were brought up Christian. It is a difficult & emotionally charged journey, when one moves from traditional indoctrination into a world of critical and rational thinking. It can be earth shattering at best for some and yet there is no support network available to help people with that transition. We should consider ourselves lucky to find each other to speak about the subject.

mwest1234, I tend to wonder if many of the greatest thinkers of the past weren't already atheists but they knew the implications of stating they were at the time would be so problematic it wasn't worth risking. Even today the social implications of being a non-believer are risky and cause an apprehension from people who still hold superstition in any form. They consider atheists 'dark.' We don't understand spiritual matters, so they think.

I agree. Can you fathom that for the first time in our history, it is so easy to see just how many atheists are out there? I believe that the sight of people professing that they think it's all hogwash and there's no need for fear will transform our world, slowly but surely.

Interesting thoughts indeed. I totally agree that people interact in negative ways and solve nothing. Sharing and interacting with people is all that youtube is about. Religion is here to stay for a long time, so in my opinion it is about how we deal with it and share our opinions as freethinkers constructively with others so that all people learn something from it. Everyone has something to offer, even if we may disagree on things.
