Skepticism is a good thing, but we need to balance it with compassion and understanding when our skeptical nature feels a need to belittle others who aren't skeptical over a given issue.

Yes, I agree with this. What amazes me is the dramatic extent to which people can turn a blind eye to the requirement of hard evidence in the case of religion, but everything else in their life does require evidence.

Yes, formal education is powerful here. The stark discrepancy between formative education and what one chooses to go along with religiously still baffles me. It's like that part of their brain is just ignored somehow.

Here I think consequences have to play into it. If the consequences are truly negative again and again, then I think there will be more selective pressure to adapt differently over time.

I think some people just have a wider curiosity for things around them. It doesn't seem to matter what class or background they come from when it comes to an inquisitive mind.
