Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 04:24:29 A bit slow but a lot of good points. I feel the same way about seeing religous people as still capable of being smart and I have Christian friends that can teach me a thing or two. Still its frustrating, and I try not to get my mouth flapping about it to them because even though evidence is litteraly around them I dont want to ruin what makes them happy. However when it comes to religion getting into public education Ill stand firmly and openly against it. __________________________________________________
parispeter2 ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 04:34:26 Thanks for your comments, and you're right: I need to speed up! On what you say, I would argue that friendship can be deepened by talking about real issues - if they are real friends - and that we can be just as happy without God! There are plenty of other sources of wisdom: philosophy, literature, life experience etc. __________________________________________________
Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 05:47:52 Too complicated to know what you realy want from people. I could say that I would be happy if he did realize all the possibilaties around him, but it wouldnt be worth it if he lost his personal link to life, so to say. Being an atheist myself is like a liberating feeling of self acomplishment on everything I do, and self shame for my wrong doings. good or bad I blame myself. When it comes to death I have to say it is a rather cold thought to linger on as being an atheist. __________________________________________________
parispeter2 ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 05:56:22 Not quite sure I understand your first point. I totally agree with the second point. As for death, unfortunately it's the end as far as we know. that's a tough truth, but it's a TRUTH. Positively, it makes it crucial that we live every moment of life as meaningfully as possible. Read Nietzsche! __________________________________________________
Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:05:02 Trust me I agree on the aspect of death. My first point is simply put, Im not sure I want risk his loss to what makes him enjoy his life for the MY gain of him seeing the world as it is, and being able to use that to his advantage. I hope that makes more sense. On a footnote I dont normaly talk about death so dont see me as a dark gloom. I rather enjoy my life and I do plan to make the most of it. __________________________________________________
parispeter2 ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:15:46 But I think your friend would enjoy life more in a sense, because he would be freer in his beliefs! On death: many philosophers (Plato, Cicero, Montaigne etc.) have said that philosophy is a reflection on death i.e. on human mortality. I prefer Spinoza's saying: "a free man thinks thinks of nothing less than of his death" (Ethics, Part 4, Propn 67). __________________________________________________
Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:19:09 If religion is what makes him happy then Im not going to press him to see it my way. That might be the best way to put it. At any rate I dont want this to be a ME conversation. Got any subject you want to talk about? __________________________________________________
scarfo ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:29:34 Too many people think far too hard about religion. The entire concept of a greater being that gives us stuff and loves us unconditionally is completely ludicrous. The concept of God was created by proto-people who struggled to explain what was going on around them in the world, so they just blamed someone else - God. __________________________________________________
Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:30:09 Didnt mean that as a rude shut off. I realize I was the one who started this subject. Just letting you know that Im wanting to hear the concerns and subjects your wanting to post as well. __________________________________________________
Techrubbish ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:40:30 I agree scarfo, its sad to see how people are still so easily manipulated by religion, but its realy sad that they are being manipulated by people like Ted Haggard through reilgion. __________________________________________________
parispeter2 ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 06:50:38 Don't worry I didn't take it badly Techrubbish! But in fact I disagree with what you just said. You see, there isn't just a "my way" and a "your way" of seeing things, but these evolve, partly through discussion with others, and are improved in this way. Discussion is not forcing, even though it should be done sensitively and with humility, since even we might be wrong! __________________________________________________
RalphGrogen1 ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 09:18:24 alot of good points in this video, i like the rational approach __________________________________________________
beabeliever ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 09:34:19 You believe Spinoza, Nietzsche, Toqueville, Locke, etc. I believe Bach,Franklin, Hugo,Goethe, Churchill,Beethoven,DeTocqueville and tens of thousands more (apart from the Bible!). All brilliant. All logical. All Christians.... there is no higher logic! __________________________________________________
beabeliever ::: Favorites 2007-05-20 09:39:58 P2: "a free man thinks thinks of nothing less than of his death." Yet death is the ultimate end of all! 100% guarantee. If a man doesn't have the "death question" assured, how can he really live freely? It's like the elephant dung in the living room everyone is trying to deny during a cocktail party .... __________________________________________________
